Can I let someone go who’s been here 5 months?

Mirith

This could end in a dismissal, so it’s one for your HR expert. I’ve passed it to Rachel with our chat. She’ll check the reason and the process with you, and prepare the letters.

Rachel has this nowReply by 5pm today
A preview of the Maravier app: an owner asks whether they can let someone go after 5 months, and Mirith passes it to their HR expert, with a reply due by 5pm that day. Behind it, the letter inviting the employee to a meeting, checked by the owner’s HR expert.

From 1 January, staff can claim unfair dismissal after 6 months.

The Employment Rights Act changes what every small employer has to get right. Here’s what’s already in force and what’s coming.

  1. Sick pay from day one, and holiday records kept for 6 years.

  2. Staff have 6 months, not 3, to bring most tribunal claims.

  3. A duty to take all reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment, and liability for harassment by customers.

  4. Unfair dismissal claims after 6 months’ service, not 2 years.

  5. No cap on unfair dismissal compensation.

Maravier updates your contracts, policies and processes for each change, and tells you what to do before it lands.

Everything in one plan

One plan, one price. The only extras are listed in the fine print.

Answers from Mirith, with sources

Mirith, our assistant, answers everyday questions in the app at any hour, with the source: the Acas guidance, gov.uk page or law it’s based on. You can also message your HR expert in the app.

A named HR expert for anything serious

Your HR expert handles disciplinaries, grievances and anything that could reach a tribunal with you, and does the paperwork at every step. It’s the same HR expert every time, with a named backup when they’re away.

Every dismissal checked

Before anyone is dismissed, your HR expert checks the process and prepares the letters, by the next working day.

Processes run for you

We run disciplinary, grievance, absence and dismissal processes step by step: the letters, the timings and the records.

Compliant in a day

When you join, we write updated contracts for every employee, with the disciplinary and grievance procedures they point to, ready for you to read and send for e-signature within one working day of finishing your set-up. Your full staff handbook follows in your second month, or straight away if you pay yearly.

Starters and leavers

Contract on day one, right-to-work check, the union-rights statement, notice and final pay worked out, records kept.

The 6-month alarm

We flag each new starter at month 4, so you review their probation before unfair dismissal rights start.

Harassment training for all staff

A short online course for staff and a module for managers, with completion records as your evidence. New starters get it in their first two weeks, everyone repeats it every year, and the reminders are sent for you.

A staff app

Staff book holiday, report sickness and raise concerns, anonymously if they need to. Concerns come to us, and your HR expert deals with them with you.

Tribunal defence included

From day one, we defend claims about problems that start after you join, at no extra cost, as long as you ask us before you act and follow our advice. Its final terms are still being signed off by a lawyer. If they change, we’ll email you before you’re charged, and you can have a full refund. The conditions are in the fine print, in plain English.

Message us in the app. We do the paperwork and run the process; you only make the calls an owner has to make.

The fine print, upfront

Every condition, in plain English, before you pay.

Tribunal defence.

It covers problems that start after you join, from your first day as a member: the first complaint, absence or incident has to come after you join. Tell us about anything already brewing when you join: we’ll help with it, but the defence won’t cover it. For pre-orders, you join when your subscription starts at launch. You need to ask us before you act and follow our advice, so we can defend it, and the claim has to arrive while you’re still a member. Its final terms are still being signed off by a lawyer. If they change, we’ll email you before you’re charged, and you can have a full refund.

What costs extra.

  • Independent investigations: £995 + VAT at 20% (£1,194 including VAT) each.
  • Independent hearings and appeals: £595 + VAT at 20% (£714 including VAT) each.

Both for when you need someone uninvolved.

  • Settlement agreements: £395 + VAT at 20% (£474 including VAT) each, drafted and checked by our solicitor.
  • Health and safety: an optional add-on from summer 2027, £25 a month for up to 5 staff plus £2 for each extra employee, + VAT at 20% (£30 a month plus £2.40 for each extra employee, including VAT).

What we are.

We’re your HR team, not a law firm: we do the HR work and the paperwork, and our employment solicitor will draft the legal documents. The law makes you, the employer, responsible for decisions about your staff, so the final call on things like a dismissal is yours. We tell you exactly what to do, and do everything around it.

How you pay.

Business prices, plus VAT at 20%. Monthly, with no contract: cancel online any time. Or pay yearly: 12 months for the price of 10.

Who’s behind Maravier

Maravier is a new UK company. We’re appointing our HR experts now. Every one we take on has at least CIPD Level 5 and 3 or more years handling disciplinaries and tribunal claims for small employers. Our employment solicitor will handle the legal documents.

More about how we work

Questions

When does Maravier launch?

January 2027. Founding members are set up first, during January.

What happens to my money if you don’t launch?

You get all of it back. Your pre-order is refundable any time before launch, and if we haven’t launched by 31 March 2027, we refund everyone automatically.

Can I cancel?

Yes, online, any time. There’s no contract. If you pay yearly, we remind you before it renews. Everything we’ve issued stays yours to download as PDFs, even after you leave.

Will I always deal with the same person?

Yes. You get a named HR expert who gets to know your business: the same person every time, with a named backup when they’re away. We only change your expert if they leave or you ask, and the new one gets a handover and your full history.

Is Maravier a law firm?

No. We’re your HR team. Our employment solicitor will draft legal documents such as settlement agreements. As the employer, you make the final call on decisions about your staff, and we do the work around them.

What does the tribunal defence cover?

Claims about problems that start after you join, from your first day as a member, as long as you ask us before you act and follow our advice. We defend you at no extra cost. Its final terms are still being signed off by a lawyer. If they change, we’ll email you before you’re charged, and you can have a full refund.

How fast will I get answers?

Mirith, our assistant, answers everyday questions in the app at any hour, with the source. Mirith passes anything serious to your HR expert, who replies by 5pm if it reaches them by 3pm on a working day, and otherwise by noon the next working day. Every dismissal is checked by the next working day. Your HR expert works 9 to 5, Monday to Friday, except bank holidays, and you can message them in the app.

Do you cover Northern Ireland?

Not yet. Employment law there is different, so Maravier covers England, Scotland and Wales.

Do you work with my industry?

We handle the HR for offices, shops, salons, clinics, hospitality and trades, including extra rules like tips policies and CSCS cards. Care homes, home care, childcare, security, farming, haulage and financial services have extra rules we’re still building in, so book a call first. For any other business, we check it fits before launch, and your pre-order stays refundable.

Do you do health and safety?

Yes, as an optional add-on from summer 2027: £25 a month for up to 5 staff, plus £2 for each extra employee, + VAT at 20% (£30 a month, plus £2.40 for each extra employee, including VAT). It starts with offices, shops, salons and clinics; hospitality and trades follow later. You can tick it when you reserve; we won’t charge for it until it’s ready.

Who sees my staff’s information?

You, the people you allow, and your Maravier HR team. Our privacy notice explains how we store and protect it.

What if I have more than 49 staff?

Maravier is built for 1 to 49 staff. Book a call and we’ll tell you whether it fits.

Do I need to be a limited company?

No. Sole traders, partnerships and companies are all welcome, as long as you employ staff.

Is VAT added?

Yes. Prices exclude VAT, which is added at 20%. VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim it.
