Freelance HR expert (HR adviser)
Self-employedRemoteFlexible hours
Maravier is a new HR service for small employers with 1 to 49 staff in England, Scotland and Wales, launching in January 2027. Our software and assistant handle routine questions and paperwork: contracts, letters, holiday and sick-pay records. Our HR experts handle everything that needs judgement. We’re looking for experienced, self-employed HR advisers to be the named expert for a list of small businesses.
What you’ll do
- Be the named HR expert for your own list of clients, with a named backup when you’re away. Clients deal with you every time, not whoever’s free.
- Guide owners through disciplinaries, grievances, absence, performance and dismissals, from first advice to the outcome letter. Our system drafts the letters; you check and tailor them.
- Check every proposed dismissal by the next working day.
- Reply to the questions our assistant hands over, in the app: by 5pm if they reach you by 3pm on a working day, otherwise by noon the next working day.
- Welcome new clients and check their contracts and handbook before they go out.
- Handle concerns staff raise through the app, including anonymous ones.
What you won’t do: investigations, which go to independent investigators; settlement agreements and tribunal work, which will go to our employment solicitor; or health and safety.
What you’ll need
- CIPD Level 5 or above.
- 3 or more years advising small employers on disciplinaries, grievances and tribunal claims in England, Scotland and Wales.
- Up-to-date knowledge of the Employment Rights Act changes, including unfair dismissal rights after 6 months from 1 January 2027.
- Clear, plain writing, and confidence giving advice in writing, by voice note and by video call.
- Your own professional indemnity insurance, or willingness to get it.
- A UK base with a private, secure place to work.
Nice to have: experience on an HR advice line or at an HR services firm, running workplace training, and clients in hospitality, retail, salons, clinics or trades.
How it works
- You’re self-employed: you run your own business, can work for others and choose when you work, as long as you meet the reply times above.
- Small at first: an hour or two a week in early 2027, growing as clients join, at about 30 minutes a client a month on average. Meeting the reply times means checking in every working day, so this suits someone who already runs their own HR practice.
- £35 to £45 an hour depending on experience, for time logged in our system, invoiced monthly, with a monthly minimum while you’re a client’s named HR expert or backup: about £300 for a named expert and £140 for a backup, so the daily checks are always paid.
- Client work starts in January 2027, when we launch. There may also be 4 to 5 paid hours a week of set-up work in November and December. We’ll confirm both by mid-November 2026, after our pre-launch test.
How to apply
Send your CV and a short note answering these three questions to hello@maravier.com by Sunday 18 October 2026.
- How long have you advised small employers, and how many clients do you usually look after at once?
- Tell us about a time you stopped a dismissal going wrong.
- How many hours a week could you give us, and when?
Next come a 15-minute call, a paid work test (£50), an interview and references. We welcome applications from everyone. No agencies, please.
