10 things every employer in England, Scotland and Wales should have in place

Before 1 January 2027

List every employee’s start date. From 1 January 2027, anyone with 6 months’ service can claim unfair dismissal, not 2 years, and there’s no longer a cap on compensation.
Hold probation reviews by month 5. Decide before the 6-month mark, follow a fair process and keep notes.
Give every new starter a written statement of terms on day one.
Add the government’s statement on the right to join a trade union to your starter pack.
Change contracts only by agreement.
